To the Teacher:
Our classrooms are the laboratories of our democratic republic, Dr. Isidore Starr
points out, and our future voters should receive their basic training in our schools.
This years Teachers Guide to the National Student/Parent Mock Election Issues
Forum takes advantage of the additional space publishing on the web allows to provide
a larger selection of classroom activities. We hope teachers will choose those activities
that best meet the needs of their classes and share with us their ideas for training our
future voters, as well as their evaluation of the materials they find here.
The hallmark of the National Student/Parent Mock Election is freedom and flexi-
bility. No teacher is required to use all or even part of the voter education materials the
National Student/Parent Mock Election provides. If you find others you consider better
suited to your students needs, please feel free to use your professional judgement, and
share your find with us! The only requirement is that your students vote on issues as
well as candidates on Mock Election Day, November 1. See the Issues Ballot at the end
of this guide. It will also appear on GovernmentGuide.com where students will cast their
votes.
Please be sure to see the awards application on our web site (www.nationalmock
election.com). Awards for Outstanding Voter Education Projects are given in conjunction
with the National Student/Parent Mock Election by NASBE (National Association of
State Boards of Education), AASA (American Association of School Administrators),
NASSP (National Association of Secondary School Principals), NASC (National
Association of Student Councils), CNN and the League of Women Voters.
If you believe you (or your students) have led an outstanding voter education proj-
ect, please let us know!
Our warm good wishes for an exciting Mock Election experience.
Sincerely,
Gloria Kirshner
President
